Life Insurance Guide for Beginners
Plain-language answers to the questions every first-time buyer asks — written by a LIC adviser in Hajipur who explains these basics to families every week.
What is life insurance?
Life insurance is a contract between you and an insurer: you pay a regular premium, and in return the insurer promises to pay a fixed amount (the sum assured) to your family if something happens to you during the policy term — and in many plans, a maturity benefit to you if you complete the term.
Its real purpose is income replacement. If your family depends on your earnings, life insurance makes sure that household expenses, children's education and loan repayments can continue even in your absence.
How does a life insurance policy work?
1. Choose a plan and cover. You select the plan type, sum assured and policy term based on your goals. Your premium is calculated from your age, health, term and cover amount.
2. Pay premiums. Premiums can usually be paid yearly, half-yearly, quarterly or monthly. Paying on time keeps the policy in force; missing them for too long lapses the policy (which can often be revived later).
3. Stay covered. During the term your nominee is protected for the sum assured. Savings-oriented LIC plans also accumulate bonuses that grow your payout over time.
4. Receive the benefit. On maturity you (or on an unfortunate event, your nominee) receive the payout. A good agent handles the paperwork — that's a core part of the services I provide.
What should you consider before choosing a policy?
Use this checklist before signing any proposal form:
- Cover amount (sum assured): a common rule is 10–15 times your annual income, plus outstanding loans.
- Policy term: cover yourself at least until your dependents are financially independent.
- Premium affordability: choose a premium you can pay comfortably for the full term, not just this year.
- Plan type: pure protection (term), savings (endowment/money back), retirement (pension) or market-linked (ULIP) — match it to your goal.
- Riders: accidental death, critical illness and premium waiver riders add low-cost extra protection.
- Nominee details: keep them correct and updated so claims reach the right person quickly.
- Tax benefits: premiums may qualify under Section 80C and payouts under Section 10(10D), subject to prevailing tax laws.
